Alstom Citadis has supplied eleven vehicles 44 meters to the first line of light rail Dubai, the world's only acting with the current collection system APS surface to prevent the use of catenary. The line, 10.6 kilometers, went into service on Wednesday November 12 and has eleven stations. Alstom and its partner, Coley Besix FM will maintain rolling stock and fixed installations for thirteen years, under a contract worth 120 million euros.
The line serves the densely populated areas of Al Sufouh, Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence. Connects with the Red Line subway in Jumeirah Lake Towers and Dubai Marina, and the Palm Monorail on Palm Jumeirah. Most of the line runs at surface along Al Sufouh Road, however, there are some elevated sections in Dubai Marina. The circulation intervals are ten minutes at peak hours and twelve-peak.
The vehicles incorporate next generation equipment adapted to the extreme weather conditions in the Gulf, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, high humidity and the presence of sand. All stations that incorporate air conditioning, platform screen doors have to deal with high temperatures. The vehicles have different sections for passengers traveling in gold and silver class, and to enable men and children traveling separately from men. Some stations have elevators and escalators.
The line will be operated by Serco, which already operates the subway, with a contract for a period of 75 months, which won the Road and Transport Authority of Dubai (RTA) in 2013.
The first phase, with a cost of about 694 million euros, envisages transporting 27,000 passengers a day, increasing to 66,000 when Phase 2, an expansion of four kilometers between Al Sufouh to Mall of the Emirates, which will open in 2020.
